This year, our quarterly webinar series has continued to grow as a platform for bringing together national and campus-level experts to explore timely issues, monitor emerging product trends and share resources that support campus tobacco and nicotine control efforts. Attendance is up and the ongoing interest from the ETU network reflects the value of these sessions.
We’re proud to offer these webinars as part of our continued commitment to supporting campuses with learning opportunities, practical resources and a space to connect around shared goals.
Here’s a look at what we’ve covered so far in 2024–2025:
Market Watch Updates have become a staple of each webinar thanks to Caroline North, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin. Her presentations have focused on emerging products like smart vapes, nicotine analogs and IQOS heat-not-burn devices — giving attendees practical insights into the evolving tobacco product landscape.
In October 2024, Alex Loukas, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at UT Austin, shared recent findings on the co-use of cannabis and tobacco among college students and young adults. Lindsay Hauser, M.S., M.T.T.S., from ETU Virginia and Director, Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center, introduced the Virginia Tobacco Policy Dashboard, a tool designed to visualize state policy, track progress and support stakeholder engagement.
Our December 2024 webinar featured a campus success story from Rosemary Coffman, Ph.D., C.R.C., Executive Director of Student Success and Wellbeing at Lee College. She shared how her team leveraged ETU resources and community partnerships to promote wellness and build a tobacco-free campus culture. We also heard from Kelly Graham and Vera Kuma of the Truth Initiative, who introduced the new Ex Program and grant opportunities for campuses seeking to become tobacco-free or enforce an existing tobacco-free campus policy. Texas institutions of higher education can fill out the ETU interest form to request free communication materials for promoting the Ex Program on campus.
In our most recent April 2025 webinar, K. Ashley Garling, Pharm.D., Assistant Director of Programs, Center for Health Communication at The University of Texas at Austin, discussed the link between Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), early nicotine use and the challenges it presents for quitting. Our partners at the CHC also shared the new ETU Social Media Toolkit, featuring ready-to-use posts, graphics and tips to help campuses promote tobacco-free policies, support prevention efforts and share information about cessation resources.
