ETU Day and the Great American Smokeout Bring Quit Support to Campus Communities

Eliminate Tobacco Use (ETU) Day and the Great American Smokeout (GASO) are annual observances that give campuses an opportunity to engage students and staff with prevention, education and cessation resources. They also provide an opportunity to promote tobacco-free campus policies and raise awareness of the health risks associated with tobacco and nicotine use. Together, these observances offer a meaningful way to encourage healthier choices and support a tobacco-free culture across campus communities.

See how some of our partner institutions celebrated ETU Day and GASO on November 20, 2025.

UT Health Tyler

UT Health Tyler hosted a Great American Smoke Out (GASO) event on campus to promote early screening for lung cancer and emerging treatment services. ETU Texas Steering Committee member, Misty Lewis of UT Health Tyler's Lung Nodule Program was interviewed by media.

The University of Texas at Tyler

The UT Tyler Peers Against Tobacco group hosted a 'Tacos Not Tobacco' awareness day on campus to increase awareness about their tobacco-free campus policy, harms of tobacco and nicotine products and available tobacco treatment resources on campus.

Lee College

Lee College hosted an ETU Day event on campus to share information about treatment services for individuals considering quitting nicotine, as well as those looking for ways to support loved ones.

During the event, the team distributed Quit Kits, with bags provided by the Bay Are Council on Drugs and Alcohol. Each kit included practical tools and motivational items, including a small picture frame encouraging participants to reflect on their “Why” as a simple, daily reminder of their reasons for quitting.

The event was made possible through collaboration with the Texas Quitline, Peers Against Tobacco, the Addiction Counseling Prevention Program and the Bay Area Council on Drugs and Alcohol.

Use the ETU Success Story Submission Form to highlight a successful program or initiative you've implemented to create a tobacco-free culture on your campus. Your story could inspire others to take action to eliminate tobacco use on their campus.
